Q: Did you dance as well as listen to jazz?

A: Dance, you mean dance? Dancing was very much more formal in those days. Not a jazz thing. For one thing you had to do it with somebody else, you couldn't dance alone. That presented problems for a start if you hadn't got somebody else.
